Default Coloring Contest (Mortbane 1079AE Part 3)

Part 3: Coloring Contest

Hello again and welcome to Part 3! This part of the contest is where I invite everyone to color their choice of sketches from Part 2 of the contest. You can color a picture even if you didn't participate in the previous contests. The pictures are based on the Top 3 stories. Check out all the stories, winners, and sketches at the Wordpress blog.

Since four people submitted entries to Part 2 and I enjoyed all of them, I decided to put all of them up for the coloring contest. Here are the pictures you can choose to color.

"Epilogue" by Morag D, based on "Epilogue" by Tzu

"The Choice" by Tzu, based on "The Raven's Egg" by Aquabeard

by Luca, based on "Reflection" by Peter Gallant

And by William Koshi, based on "Epilogue" by Tzu

For the final part of the contest, just choose a picture to color, color it up any way you like and send it in. One talented artist could be part of the team to receive a special award once the contest is finished. More details on that are posted in the Q&A page on the site.

Prizes: (that's what you really want to know, right?)
1st Place: 100k
2nd Place: 75k
3rd Place: 50k
4th Place: 25k
5th Place: 10k

Top 3 and runners-up (4th and 5th place, and 5 honorable mentions) will also get 10 vault points, to use on an assortment of items from the prize vault!

Rules:
  • Color your choice of the pictures listed. You may color as many as you like, but only one will be eligible to place.
  • You may color digitally or print/color/scan manually if you prefer. You are allowed to make moderate changes to the pictures (such as lightening heavy dark areas to show more color, smudging lines to blend into the color) but please respect the original artist's work and don't remove or rearrange parts of their sketch.
  • Acceptable formats: JPEG, PNG, or PSD.
  • You may request additional screenshots. Images can be found on the Bio page. Don't forget the wiki is a great resource for reference pictures.

Deadline and Submission:

Sketches are due Monday, August 10, 2009 11:59PM GMT (extensions may be granted under extreme conditions only, but the final results will be announced the following Friday)

Include your in-game name (this will not be posted unless requested), and a preferred name (which will be used to identify your entry publicly).

If you would like to post it to the forums, you may do so by uploading it to your Imageshack or Photobucket account and posting a thumbnail link. You may also post it to your DeviantArt gallery, just remember to send me a link and your info. If you would like to send it to me directly, you may request my email address or find it on the wordpress blog

If you have any questions about Part 3 that aren't covered here, just ask.

This sounds like a very cool contest, just need to know: In the sketch by William Koshi there are various characters (of which i don't know cause i just saw this contest today), do you have their names so that we can wiki them for color reference? About file size, what is the limit? Cause psd files can become large. :P

Going clockwise the names of the characters are as follows: Dwayna, Tzunedaine, Roan(Charr),Grim Mortbane, Grim Mortbane partially nude lol, Melandru, Grenth, Nicholas The Traveler. There you go Seline I hope this helps. All of the gods, nicholas, and charr can be found on wiki. Tzu can be found on the Contest Part 2 Thread, and Grim is on the contest website, guru thread and pratically everywhere . Good Luck!

GO TZU! hihi
anyway; this is where the tedious part begins, for me anyway. Halfway through doing the lineart, I was like - what if you have to colour this?!!? it's so huuuge! and part of me still is a bit concerned about that xD I don't know why, but I always seem to be tons more patient with linework than with all the rest. Ah well, I'll just have to give it a shot. Mebbe it'll be experimental? Who knows... xD

Good luck to you all, OGOG GURU!!

Go me!
I reckon people will decide themselves how much detail and linework to retain. Some people might stick within the lines mostly, others might just paint over the whole thing, using your lines as a guide.
I'm colouring your entry It's funnn ~

I'm exactly the opposite of you, though; I spend tons more time colouring than sketching/making lineart. But that might be because I'm still an amateur when it comes to colouring >.>'

ogog guru indeed ^.^
I'm looking forward to people's entries. So much fun seeing people's styles of colouring and how they choose to interpret your lineart, how they decide on the textures and lighting, etc. I'm thinking there will be a great deal of epic artworks this round.

Just popping in to let everyone know the contest is still going on. I didn't totally disappear off the map yet, but I'll be gone for just over a week starting on Thursday evening. The contest will be ending about the same time I get back from the trip, so I hope I have a few surprises in my inbox then. No flaming bags of poo or anything like that, even though I would be surprised...in fact, someone send me a picture of a flaming bag of poo, I could use a laugh.

pls download full version from: http://thedeathspell.deviantart.com/...ogue-132222546

I do realise that the shadow thrown by Grim is not correct in relation to the light source. Looked rubbish otherwise tho xD Anyway. Hope you enjoy!
Good luck to everybody else!

Two entries in and another on the way. Y'know, I've been away from my home and my internet for a week, I think I'll toss another week on the contest. How's that sound? I didn't want to set a deadline and then keep pushing it back, because I know how it is to be waiting to hear the results and find out you have to wait longer. I'll only do it this one week, promise.

To Morag and Seline, your coloring is great, I'm sorry you have to wait, and if you want to use the extra week to make any adjustments, feel free. I don't want you to feel like you didn't have just as much time as anyone else because of the sudden deadline extension.

New deadline: August 17th

Good luck and have fun!

<3 for deadline extension, I should have time to work on coloring one now

I'm bored with digital art at the moment, so I'm printing them out to color and re-scan

Starr, if we get permission from the original artist, can we modify the line art slightly?

I kinda generally color over the lines, so I'm not sure what will happen :\

Sure, Blue, if you need to color over the lines that's fine. If it's something major, you may want to ask the artist, but things like Tzu's hair in the fourth picture being colored over light rather than dark like the sketch is fine.

Forgot to ask, Seline, did you want your picture posted here or for me to wait? I know you posted a note here when you emailed it to me, and I would love to share it. I just want to make sure that's okay before I start posting it all over.

...... 4 am. My right arm has died. But I finished it.

The worst part is, I think I might still edit it and fix a few things.
The colours in the jpeg version kinda bleed a little, I'll look into that.

4 entries now, w00t!
Alyssaa, don't be discouraged. For your first time coloring on PS you did great. You picked what I would consider a pretty challenging picture to color and jumped right in. Thank you

Tzu, that's so cool. The first daytime color scheme so far. And can you believe all these are based on "Epilogue?" The story has that effect I guess.

Well, as I've said, the deadline is moved to the 17th, so if anyone wants to do any touching up you still have time. I don't think any of them need touch-ups, but I also know that as an artist I notice things in my own work, that only bother me, a day after I consider the picture finished. So if you like, you can.

And breaking away from the strict contest talk, how's everyone's summer? I've been all over this month. Saw some really cool things...ate a scorpion...lol! Long-overdue visit with family. Did things I probably won't have a chance to do again. Anything exciting?
